TISED Talk: Methane Emission from Abandoned Oil/Gas Wells

November 9, 2023 @ 11:00 am

Free

Part of the Sustainability in Engineering and Design Seminar Series.

Studies reveal that abandoned oil and gas wells are releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere, potentially impacting our groundwater, soils, and ecosystems. To formulate cost-effective strategies for mitigating and managing the environmental and climate impacts of abandoned wells, it is crucial to comprehend the factors associated with leaky wells, especially those emitting gases at high rates.

In this enlightening presentation, Professor Mary Kang, Asst. Professor in Dept. of Civil Engineering, McGill College in Montreal, will share data on methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells throughout Canada and the United States. She will also discuss the implications for national greenhouse gas emission estimates and vital mitigation strategies.
