Rally and Public Comment at Ventura County Government Building to Protest Supervisors’ Caving to Big Oil

September 12, 2023 @ 10:30 am

Don’t settle for dirty politics: The Ventura County Board of Supervisors’ new conservative majority has negotiated a backroom deal to weaken Ventura county’s public health and climate laws. In 2020, encouraged by the public, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors passed several precedent-setting, climate protecting, and community forward policies, including:

  • The first health and safety buffer zone in the nation requiring that no new oil wells be drilled within 1,500 feet of homes and 2,500 feet of schools;
  • A ban of the flaring of excess fracked gas; and
  • A limit of diesel oil trucking by requiring the use of pipelines whenever possible.

Oil companies, led by Aera Energy, did as they always did: They sued to hold up these laws and continue polluting as long as possible. The County was gearing up to fight back in court…until the political winds changed. A new conservative, anti-environment, anti-climate, and anti-public health majority took over following the 2022 elections and betrayed our communities to Big Oil, agreeing to gut these vital climate and health protections. The Board of Supervisors will announce this “slap on the wrist” settlement at their next meeting on September 12th.

So, on Tuesday, September 12th at 10:30 am, we’re gathering in front of the Government Center for a demonstration and wave of public comment at 11:30 am at the Board of Supervisors meeting. We will reach out with a time as soon as the agenda becomes available!

Join the gathering (10:30 am) and public comment (11:30 am.)
