The Society of Fearless Grandmothers-SB held Shoe Strikes for Climate Justice in 2020. Hundreds of pairs of shoes were donated by people who, but for the pandemic, would have been in the streets demonstrating to demand CLIMATE JUSTICE! At the last shoe strike on 10-31-20, 864 pairs of shoes were displayed on the beach at Stearns Wharf. The shoe strikes were suspended due to safety concerns during the pandemic surge in late 2020 and early 2021. BUT what happened to all those shoes?
The red pumps shown above and many other nearly new shoes have been donated to the “Soles4Souls” organization which provides shoes to entrepreneurs in developing countries to start small businesses. The remainder of the shoes used in the demonstrations have been donated to local Santa Barbara organizations such as Adam’s Angels, Showers of Blessings, Mothers’ Helpers, PATH and other local charitable groups. In the coming months, the Society of Fearless Grandmothers-SB will continue to find creative ways to raise awareness of the Climate Emergency and demand action to protect the planet for future generations.
