The Society of Fearless Grandmothers – Santa Barbara will hold our third monthly Shoe Strike for Climate Justice on Saturday, September 26th at the beach near Stearns Wharf from noon to 2:00 PM.
We invite you to donate pairs of shoes (in any condition) for this covid-safe demonstration that is part of the international Fridays for Future movement.
Since we are taking precautions during the pandemic and will not demonstrate in person, your shoes will stand in your place to demand Climate Justice! We demand that our elected officials deny any new permits for fossil fuel projects and that all responses to the pandemic focus on people and planet, not profit.
Please drop shoes off in the driveway at any of the following locations: 1428 W. Valerio St. -OR- 889 San Antonio Creek Rd. -OR- 1210 Cacique St. #24
Children’s shoes welcome – we want their interests in the future represented! Tying or banding pairs together helps.
We will collect shoes only from September 14 through September 21 to allow for a quarantine period for shoes prior to the demonstration.
The photo above is an aerial view of the August Shoe Strike for Climate Justice, where we highlighted the fact that climate change is leading to more intense and frequent wildfires.
The focus of the September shoe strike will be “This Place Will Be Water – How does sea level rise affect Santa Barbara?” We expect to hold Shoe Strikes every month through the end of the year. After the last Strike, shoes in good condition will be donated to charity, and athletic shoes that cannot be donated will be recycled. Many thanks!
