July 25 – Shoe Strike for Climate Justice – Santa Barbara

In late May, over 70 climate groups organized shoe strikes in Sweden and garnered massive publicity. Groups in the US and Canada are now planning shoe strikes for climate justice on Saturday, July 25.

The Society of Fearless Grandmothers has organized a shoe strike in Santa Barbara and other local groups are joining us. We are putting out shoes because we need to observe social distancing while making our message visible: people demand climate justice!

The first step is to gather shoes before the event. If you have shoes that you no longer use, please send us a message and we will let you know where to drop them off. (After the event, shoes in good condition will be donated to a local charity.)

We want a a just and sustainable planet for all, and for generations to come. We can no longer tolerate a planet where anyone’s right to breathe is compromised, either by police brutality of by pollution.

We demand that our elected officials must:

  • DENY any new permits for fossil fuel projects
  • FOCUS responses to the COVID-19 crisis on a just transition from the fossil fuel economy
  • PROTECT people and the environment — not corporate profit
  • END systemic oppression to stop the long history of racial and economic injustice
